What is
myofunctional therapy?
Myofunctional therapy focuses on restoring the way the body was designed to breathe, rest, and function. When the muscles of the face, tongue, and airway are working properly, everything from sleep to behavior to overall health improves.
Rather than masking symptoms, this therapy addresses the root cause—helping both children and adults achieve more stable breathing, better sleep, and optimal oral function.
At The Airway Studio, every program is built around four foundational goals:
Nasal Breathing
Breathing through the nose supports oxygen delivery, filters air, and promotes calm, regulated breathing patterns.
Lip Seal
Lips gently closed at rest helps prevent mouth breathing and supports proper facial muscle balance.
Proper Tongue Posture
The tongue should rest on the roof of the mouth, helping to support airway stability and healthy jaw development.
Correct Swallowing Pattern
A functional swallow pattern prevents compensations that can impact teeth alignment, muscle use, and overall oral function.
Signs of Airway Dysfunction
Many of the symptoms below are often overlooked or considered “normal”—but they can be strong indicators of underlying airway dysfunction or sleep-disordered breathing.
In Children:
-
Mouth breathing (day or night)
-
Snoring or restless sleep
-
Teeth grinding
-
Night waking or night terrors
-
Bedwetting beyond expected age
-
Difficulty focusing or ADHD-like behaviors
-
Speech delays or unclear articulation
-
Picky eating or messy chewing
-
Open mouth posture or forward head posture
In Adults:
-
Snoring or sleep apnea
-
Daytime fatigue or brain fog
-
Jaw tension, clenching, or TMJ symptoms
-
Headaches or neck pain
-
Chronic congestion or mouth breathing
-
Poor sleep quality
-
Anxiety or difficulty regulating the nervous system
How Myofunctional Therapy Helps
By retraining the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face, myofunctional therapy helps restore proper function and support the airway.
As these patterns improve:
-
The airway becomes more stable
-
Breathing becomes more efficient
-
Sleep becomes deeper and more restorative
-
Muscle tension and compensations decrease
-
The body shifts into a more regulated, balanced state
For children, this supports better sleep, improved behavior, and healthy growth and development.
For adults, it often leads to more energy, reduced tension, and improved overall wellness.
A Root-Cause Approach to Health
If you or your child are experiencing any of these symptoms, myofunctional therapy may be the missing piece.
At The Airway Studio, we take a whole-body, airway-focused approach—supporting lasting changes that go far beyond the mouth.
